Faith Working Through Love (Galatians 5:2-6)

²Listen! I, Paul, am telling you that if you let yourselves be circumcised, Christ will be of no benefit to you. ³Once again I testify to every man who lets himself be circumcised that he is obliged to obey the entire law. ⁴You who want to be justified by the law have cut yourselves off from Christ; you have fallen away from grace. ⁵For through the Spirit, by faith, we eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness. ⁶For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything; the only thing that counts is faith working through love. Galatians 5:2-6, NRSVue

Have you ever wondered what truly matters in your relationship with God? It is easy to focus on religious practices, traditions, or outward signs, believing that they are what make us acceptable to God. Yet Paul reminds the Galatian Christians that the heart of the gospel is found elsewhere. He writes, “For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything; the only thing that counts is faith working through love” (v. 6). Paul was not dismissing obedience or spiritual discipline. Rather, he was pointing believers back to the transforming grace of God that gives birth to a living faith.

Faith in Christ is never merely an intellectual belief or a religious label. Genuine faith expresses itself in love. God’s grace invites us into a relationship that changes the way we live and treat others. As we respond to his grace, the Holy Spirit forms Christlike character within us and leads us into holiness of heart and life. We are not saved by our efforts, nor are we left unchanged by God’s love. Grace calls for our response, and that response is seen in lives marked by compassion, humility, forgiveness, and service.

Perhaps today is an opportunity to ask what is shaping your life. Are you relying on outward appearances, or are you allowing faith to work through love? Christ invites us into a deeper life, one where trust in him becomes visible in the way we care for others. The good news is that God is still at work in us, patiently transforming us and enabling us to become the people he created us to be.

Questions for Reflection and Action

  • In what ways is my faith being expressed through love toward others?
  • Am I relying more on religious activity than on a living relationship with Christ?
  • Where might God be inviting me to cooperate with his transforming grace today?

Prayer
Gracious God, thank you for loving me and calling me into life with Christ. Forgive me when I place my confidence in outward things rather than in your grace. Help my faith become active through love, and shape my heart so that I may reflect the character of Christ in my words and actions. Continue your transforming work within me, and teach me to respond faithfully to your grace each day. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
