Who Is My Family? (Matthew 12:46-50)

Image
Who makes up your family? Read these words from Matthew 12:46-50... 46 While he was still speaking to the crowds, his mother and his brothers were standing outside, wanting to speak to him. 47 Someone told him, “Look, your mother and your brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.” 48 But to the one who had told him this, Jesus replied, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” 49 And pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! 50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.” Have you ever wondered where you truly belong? Many people carry the ache of feeling overlooked, misunderstood, or even disconnected from their own families. Jesus offers a surprising word of hope. When told that his mother and brothers were waiting to speak with him, he replied, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” Then, pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! Stronger Together (Ecclesiastes 4:9-12)

Have you ever tried to carry a burden alone, only to discover that what seemed manageable became overwhelming? Many of life’s challenges remind us that we were not created to journey through life in isolation. Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 says, “Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. As we grow in holiness and love, we do so alongside others who encourage us, challenge us, and help us remain faithful when the path becomes difficult. The passage concludes by declaring, “A threefold cord is not quickly broken” (v. 12). While the writer speaks of the strength found in unity, Christians...

Sometimes it helps to remember where we’ve come from. Think for a moment of the family you were born into (or the family that took you in). Where did you grow up? Did your family stay rooted in the same place or did you move around much? What schools did you attend? Who were your friends? Did you grow up in a church? How have all these things influenced who you are today? As we are told during our Baptismal Renewal services: Remember who you are. Isaiah speaks to people who have forgotten their own holy beginnings ( Isaiah 51:1-3 ). “Listen to me, you that pursue righteousness, you that seek the Lord. Look to the rock from which you were hewn, and to the quarry from which you were dug” (v. 1). God reminds Israel to remember their roots, not in power or abundance, but in the small, faithful beginnings of Abraham and Sarah, who trusted in God’s promise when everything looked impossible. From one man and woman came a multitude, and from their faith came blessing upon blessing. God’s r...
