Have you ever waited so long for something that you wondered if it would ever happen? Waiting can test our faith, especially when God's promises appear delayed. Genesis 21:1-7 tells the joyful story of Isaac's birth. After decades of waiting, Sarah gave birth just as God had promised. The passage begins, “The Lord dealt with Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did for Sarah as he had promised” (v. 1). What once seemed unimaginable became reality through God's faithfulness. Sarah's laughter, which had once been marked by doubt, was transformed into laughter filled with joy. She declared, “God has brought laughter for me; everyone who hears will laugh with me” (v. 6). God's promises are not empty words. Even when fulfillment takes longer than we expect, God continues to work in ways we cannot always see. In Genesis 12, God speaks to Abraham* with both command and promise: “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you… I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you… and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed” ( Genesis12:1-3 ). Abraham is not given a map, only a promise. Notice that this begins with God’s initiative, calling Abraham before Abraham has done anything to earn such favor. The journey of faith always begins with God’s initiative, a grace that goes before us and invites our response. The New Testament does not discard the promise to Abraham; it deepens and widens it. What begins as a call to one family becomes, in Christ, an invitation to all families of the earth . The covenant is not replaced but fulfilled in a way that reflects God’s grace reaching outward. On Monday we looked at the first three verses of Isaiah 51 . Today we look at the next three verses.  4 Listen to me, my people,     and give heed to me, my nation, for a teaching will go out from me     and my justice for a light to the peoples. 5 I will bring near my deliverance swiftly;     my salvation has gone out,     and my arms will rule the peoples; the coastlands wait for me,     and for my arm they hope. 6 Lift up your eyes to the heavens     and look at the earth beneath, for the heavens will vanish like smoke,     the earth will wear out like a garment,     and those who live on it will die like gnats, but my salvation will be forever,     and my deliverance will never be ended.
