Listen to Him: A Holiness That Engages the World

In this message, I invite you to explore the Transfiguration of Our Lord, a profound event that reveals God’s radiant glory and challenges us to follow Christ into the heart of our daily lives. Drawing from my own memories of a confirmation retreat in State College, Pennsylvania, under the mentorship of Dr. Nelson Frank, I reflect on the Celtic concept of “thin places”—those sacred moments where the boundary between heaven and earth becomes porous and the divine presence feels especially near. By examining the experiences of Moses on Mount Sinai and the eyewitness testimony of Peter, we see how these mountaintop revelations are not meant for us to hide away in “shelters,” but to transform and equip us for the journeys through the valleys. Ultimately, I want to emphasize that our spiritual life hinges on the Father’s singular command to “Listen to him,” a call that requires us to pay attention to Jesus’ teachings and find direction in His Word even when the world feels chaotic. Treasure in Heaven: Living with Eternal Perspective

Treasure in Heaven: Living with Eternal Perspective Scripture Texts:  Ecclesiastes 1:2, 12-14; 2:18-23, Colossians 3:1-11, and Luke 12:13-21 August 3, 2025 – Ebenezer UMC & Black Creek UMC Introduction Grace and peace to you this morning. Today, the Word of God confronts us with important questions: What is our life for? What gives it meaning? Where do we find purpose in a world driven by work, wealth, and worry? Through our scripture texts today, the Spirit is inviting us to examine our priorities—and to reorder them under Christ. We live in a world obsessed with accumulation. From the moment we wake up, we’re bombarded with messages telling us that happiness is just one purchase away, that security comes from our bank account, and that success is measured by what we own rather than by who we are. But today, through the wisdom of Scripture, God calls us to examine our hearts and ask a fundamental question: Where is our treasure? The Teacher in Ecclesiast...

An Unshakable Life: Holiness in a World of Distraction

Image
Drawing from Book of Amos , Epistle to the Colossians , and the story of Martha and Mary in Gospel of Luke , this sermon emphasizes the importance of staying focused on God’s priorities in the present moment rather than becoming distracted by anxiety, status, rituals, or worldly concerns. Martha’s mistake was not her service—Christian faith calls believers to active love and service ( diakonia )—but that her distractions kept her from recognizing the sacred moment of being with Christ. Amos 8:1-12, Colossians 1:15-28, Luke 10:38-42   EUMC & BCUMC, July 20, 2025, Proper 11c Good morning... An important theme in today's texts is Staying Focused on Priorities – Staying Focused on the Moment. Today's Gospel text – the story about Martha and Mary – is often unfairly and incorrectly used to say devotion to Christ is more important than service. That's not what's happening here. Jesus values service and action – remember the Parable of the Good Samaritan that comes r...
