Sent Into the World (Matthew 28:16-20)
Matthew 28:16-20 brings the Gospel of Matthew to its powerful conclusion as the risen Christ meets his disciples on a mountain in Galilee and commissions them for the work ahead. Often called the Great Commission, this passage is both a sending and a promise. Jesus calls his followers to make disciples, baptize, and teach in his name, extending the good news of God’s kingdom to all nations. At the same time, he reassures them with the enduring promise of his presence: “I am with you always, to the end of the age” (v. 20). In these final verses, we see the heart of Christian discipleship, a life shaped by worship, obedience, mission, and the sustaining grace of Christ.
Today’s text begins with the disciples gathered with the risen Christ on the mountain in Galilee. Matthew tells us, “When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted” (v. 17). That small detail is comforting. Even in the presence of the risen Christ, some struggled with uncertainty. Yet Jesus did not turn them away. He drew near to them. Grace met them where they were.
Then Jesus gave them a calling that continues to shape the church today: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (v. 19). This text is the basis of our church’s mission statement: to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.
This commission is not only for pastors or missionaries. It is an invitation for every believer to participate in the loving work of God. Wesley reminds us that grace is always moving ahead of us. Before we speak a word of hope, God is already at work in the hearts of others. We are invited to cooperate with that grace through our witness, our compassion, and our daily faithfulness.
Jesus also calls his followers to teach others “to obey everything that I have commanded you” (v. 20). Discipleship is more than learning information about God. It is the ongoing transformation of our hearts and lives through the sanctifying grace of Christ. As we follow him, he shapes us into people who love more deeply, forgive more freely, and serve more faithfully. Holiness grows not through striving alone, but through daily surrender to the Spirit’s work within us and by working in community to faithfully live together as the body of Christ.
The final promise of this passage is one we desperately need: “And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age” (v. 20). Christ does not send us out alone. His presence sustains us in moments of courage and moments of doubt alike. Wherever we go today, the risen Christ goes with us, offering strength, wisdom, and peace for the journey. We are encouraged to step out in faith, trusting that God will equip us for the tasks ahead. Each act of kindness, each conversation about faith, becomes a way of participating in the Great Commission.
A Spiritual Practice for Today
Take a few moments to name one place where you feel both called and uncertain. Offer that space to Christ in prayer, and then take one small, faithful step forward, trusting his presence with you.
Questions for Reflection and Action
- Where do I sense Christ calling me to deeper faithfulness?
- What doubts or fears keep me from fully trusting his leading?
- How have I experienced Christ’s presence in difficult seasons?
- In what ways can I participate in God’s work of grace today?
- Who in my life may need to encounter the love of Christ through me?
Journaling Prompt

Blessing
May you go with courage, even when your faith feels small. May you know Christ beside you in every step. May grace lead you, sustain you, and shape you in love.
Prayer
Gracious God, you meet me in both my faith and my doubt. Thank you for calling me, not because I am ready, but because you are with me. Help me to trust your presence today and to take faithful steps in love. Shape my heart and life as I follow Christ to share his love with the world. When I feel uncertain or afraid, remind me that you are with me always. Shape my heart through your sanctifying grace so that my life may reflect the compassion, holiness, and hope of Christ. Help me to live faithfully today and to trust your Spirit in all things. Amen.
