A Good Work Begun (Philippians 1:1-11)
There are moments when you pause and realize how far someone has come. Maybe it is a child learning to read, a friend finding their footing again, or even your own slow healing after a hard season. Growth often feels quiet and unfinished, yet something steady is at work beneath the surface.
Paul writes to the Philippians (1:1-11) with deep affection, saying, “I thank my God every time I remember you… because of your sharing in the gospel from the first day until now” (vv. 3, 5). His gratitude is rooted not in perfection, but in participation. These believers are still growing, still learning, still becoming. Yet Paul sees evidence of grace already alive in them.
Then comes this beautiful promise: “I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work among you will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ” (v. 6). This is the rhythm of grace in the Wesleyan way. God’s prevenient grace awakens us before we even know it. Justifying grace meets us in Christ and sets us on a new path. And sanctifying grace continues the work, shaping us day by day into love. We are not finished products, but we are held in a faithful process. Holiness is not about pretending we have arrived. It is about remaining open to the transforming work of God’s love.
Paul’s prayer moves even deeper. He asks that their love “may overflow more and more with knowledge and full insight” (v. 9). This is a growing, discerning love that leads to lives that are “pure and blameless” and “filled with the fruit of righteousness” (vv. 10-11). Love, in this sense, becomes both the root and the fruit of a life transformed by grace.
So wherever you find yourself today, take heart. God is not finished with you. The nudges you feel, the small steps you take, the ways your heart is softening, all of it is part of a larger work. Grace invites your response, and as you say yes, even imperfectly, Christ continues shaping your life into something beautiful and whole. The good work God begins in us is sustained by mercy, strengthened through community, and carried forward by the Spirit. We are invited to cooperate with that grace each day, trusting that Christ is faithfully leading us toward love.
A Spiritual Practice for Today
Take a few minutes to reflect on your spiritual journey. Name one way you have seen growth in your life recently, and thank God for it.
Questions for Reflection and Action
- Where have I noticed God at work in my life, even in small ways?
- What is one area where God may be inviting me to grow right now?
- How can I respond to that invitation with openness and trust?
- Who in my life can I encourage, just as Paul encouraged the Philippians?
Journaling Prompt
Write about a time when you realized God was not finished with you yet. What did that moment teach you about grace?
Blessing
May you rest in the confidence that God’s work in you is ongoing.
May your love grow deeper and wider each day.
May Christ strengthen you to grow in holiness and joy each day.
Prayer
Gracious God, I thank you for the people who have reflected your love into my life. Thank you for beginning a good work in me and for staying with me through every step. Help me to trust your grace at work in my life, even when I cannot see the full picture. Grow my love, deepen my understanding, and shape me into the person you are calling me to be. Shape my heart through your grace so that my love may overflow with wisdom, compassion, and faithfulness. Help me to follow Christ more closely each day. Amen.
