In You I Take Refuge (Psalm 31:1-5)
Have you ever just needed to go to a safe place? Maybe you feel hurt or misunderstood or ashamed, or whatever. When I was a child, I felt especially safe at my grandparents’ home. When I was small, we actually lived there for a while until my father could build us a house right next door. There are moments in life when we feel like the ground shifts beneath our feet. A phone call we didn’t expect. A diagnosis we didn’t see coming. A relationship that suddenly feels fragile. In those moments, even the strongest among us can feel unsteady. We look for something solid to hold on to, something that will not crumble under pressure. We need places and people that hold us when life presses in too hard.
Psalm 31 begins right there, in that honest place where fear
and faith meet.
The psalmist cries out, “In you, O Lord, I seek refuge; do
not let me ever be put to shame; in your righteousness deliver me” (v. 1). This
is not a polished prayer. It is the kind of prayer we whisper when we are tired
of pretending we have everything under control. It is a prayer that trusts God’s
character more than our own strength.
The heart of the passage comes in verse 5: “Into your hand I
commit my spirit.” These words are both surrender and confidence. They are the
words Jesus spoke from the cross, trusting the Father even in death. For us,
they become a daily invitation. We place our lives, our fears, our hopes, and
our future into God’s hands. This is the surrender of trust, the act of placing
what is most fragile and most precious into hands strong enough to hold it.
That is the invitation of this psalm for each of us today: not to have it all
together, but to hand over what we are carrying to the One who can bear it.
This kind of trust does not happen all at once. It grows
slowly, like roots deepening in the soil. Each time we choose to place our
spirit in God’s hands, we discover that God is faithful. We learn that God’s
refuge is not a hiding place but a strengthening place. And over time, the
places where we once stumbled become places where we stand with confidence,
held by the One who is our rock and our fortress.
A Spiritual Practice for Today
Take a few quiet moments and open your hands in a posture of surrender. Slowly
pray, “Into your hand I commit my spirit.” As you do, name one worry or burden
you are placing into God’s care today.
