Our Help Comes From the Lord! Reflections on Psalm 121
As we journey through the season of Lent, we are invited to pause and reflect on our relationship with God. Many people find Psalm 121 a comforting psalm, a beautiful reminder of God’s ever-watchful presence and care in our lives.
A Song of Ascents
Psalm 121 is part of a collection known as the "Songs of Ascents," which were sung by the people of Israel as they made their way to Jerusalem for worship. As they traveled, they needed assurance of safety on their journey, just as we often seek reassurance in our own lives.
The psalm begins with the question, “I lift up my eyes to the hills— from where will my help come?” (Psalm 121:1). In a world filled with uncertainty, it’s natural to look for help and support, but the psalmist quickly reminds us that true help comes not from the hills or any earthly source, but from God himself, who created heaven and earth.
God’s Unceasing Vigilance
The psalm continues with a powerful declaration: “He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber” (Psalm 121:3). What a comforting assurance! In this psalm, God is described as our Keeper, watching over us day and night. Our help does not come from our own strength. It does not come from pretending everything is fine. It does not come from denying our need. Our help comes from the Lord—the One who made heaven and earth. The Creator is also our Keeper. This reminds us that we can rest peacefully, knowing that God is always awake and attentive to our needs.
The psalmist uses the word “keep” over and over again: “The Lord will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life. The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time on and forevermore.” That word “keep” carries the sense of protection, guarding, and faithful care. It does not promise that we will avoid hardship, but rather that we will never face it alone.
During Lent, as we prepare our hearts and reflect on our lives, we may encounter challenges or moments of doubt. This psalm encourages us to trust that God is with us in every situation, providing guidance and protection.
A Promise of Protection
The psalmist assures us, “The Lord will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life” (Psalm 121:7). While we are not promised a life free from hardships, we are assured that God’s presence goes with us through every trial. This promise is especially meaningful during the Lenten season, when we reflect on Christ’s suffering and sacrifice for us.
Through Christ, we understand that even in our struggles, we are never alone. God walks with us, offering strength and comfort. Our faith tells us that even when the way is difficult, we have a faithful guide leading us. And when the worries come — and they will come — let the question rise up naturally: Where does my help come from? And then let the answer follow just as naturally: My help comes from the Lord.
As we meditate on Psalm 121, let us lift our eyes to God, remembering that our help comes from the Creator. In every circumstance, may we find peace in his promise to be our keeper.
Closing Prayer
Gracious God, thank you for your watchful care over us. Help us to remember that you are always with us, guiding and protecting us in our journeys. In moments of doubt or fear, remind us to lift our eyes to you. May we trust in your promises and find peace in your presence. In the name of Christ’s, our Lord and Savior, we pray. Amen.
